Romantic fiction: it is an industry worth over $1 billion per year — the size of the mystery novel genre and science fiction/fantasy genre markets combined — and is said to be recession-proof. It is also at the forefront of changes in the industry, with ebooks, audiobooks, and self-publishing making up a growing segment of the market.
And yet, even as it enjoys such popularity, romantic fiction is stigmatized and seen as lowbrow, inferior to other types of literature. Why? Is it merely because it is written mostly by and for women? The Puritan prudishness that runs through Anglo-American culture? Those Fabio covers?
This salon will dig into the secrets and stigmas of this steamy sub-genre from a published writer of romance.
Tiffany Turner (writing as Marilyn Vix) has been writing romance since 2013, and is a current member of Romance Writers of America and an active member of the local chapter. She has also been an elementary teacher for 18 years, and is now semi-retired, concentrating on writing children’s books and romance. She has been self publishing for twelve years.
