018 // A wide-ranging conversation about wine

Wine is shrouded in myth and no small degree of snobbery. Do tasters really know what asphalt tastes like? Are boxed and screwcap wines really trashy? And how should we choose the right bottle? This salon will be a wide-ranging conversation about the world of wine, led by an industry professional. We’ll discuss local and corporate wines, why the sommelier exams are so difficult, and whether Merlot production has recovered after the hit it took from Sideways.

We will also discuss how the industry is changing, including the threats and opportunities posed by climate change, the rise of organic and “natural” wines, and how to interpret the growth of China and other new markets while wine consumption in traditional markets is stalling or in decline. Imbibing, as always, is optional.
