Pain killers are routinely prescribed by physicians to patients who need to manage pain. In spite of the efforts of those active in the field of pain management, addictions and overdoses in the US have hit crisis levels. Purdue Pharma and other pharmaceutical companies that sell opioids like OxyContin have been criticized for contributing to the addiction crisis. To what extent are pharmaceutical companies like Purdue Pharma obliged to go above and beyond manufacturing drugs to addressing the negative societal effects of the drugs they produce and market? What role do governments, the medical profession and users themselves play?
